This one started with my son.
The Moment
A few years ago, I began noticing something changing in my son, Kaiden. His confidence was fading, his motivation was changing, and like many children, he did not always have the words to explain what he was feeling. There was no single dramatic moment — just a father seeing that something was different.
The Question
Why do we often wait until behavior, attendance, grades, discipline, or disengagement changes before we realize a child may have been struggling long before we could see it?
I had spent more than two decades designing systems that detect problems before they become failures. On a manufacturing floor, we never wait until the entire line shuts down. We watch for the earliest signal. As a father, I realized schools were being asked to do the opposite — react, not prevent.
Behavior is often not the first signal.
It may simply be the first signal everyone can finally see. Student experiences and support needs can emerge before conventional indicators such as attendance, grades, behavior or discipline materially change. A child should not have to wait until something becomes overwhelming before they have a way to say "I need someone."
That is the heart of Support Before Failure™.
